A couple of weeks ago in Pre-school…

diwali bookWe have been building the children’s knowledge of different cultures and beliefs by learning about Diwali; a festival which celebrate the start of the Hindu New Year. Our book of the week is called ‘lighting a lamp’. It talks about what Diwali is all about and explains the traditional ways of celebrating.

diwaliThe children made ‘Divas’ out of clay and decorated them with stars. Divas are little lamps that Hindus light to welcome home the Gods Rama, sita and lakshman. We coloured Rangoli patterns and also tried to design our own. Rangoli patterns are traditionally drawn on the doorstep to ward off evil and welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity into their home so they have a good year.
